CAPESIZES
   A market that is very difficult to be positive about with falling rates in the Atlantic and the east.
   Surprisingly there was talk of short period rates negotiated with ship around $20,000 daily versus $19,000 daily. The average of the BCI 4-timecharter is currently at $14,057 daily. This average is now below the BPI and BSI timecharter average.
    In the Atlantic transatlantic rates fell again with EdF allegedly booking the Navios Pollus, a Cosco relet, 2009-built 180,707-dwt aps Bolivar for a trip to the Continent at $10,500 daily plus an undisclosed bonus.
   The same charterer was also said close to fixing or fixed the King Robert, 169,676-dwt 2008-built, a 'K' Line relet from Dunkirk for similar business at $10,500 daily. The last done on a 179,000-tonner was $12,500 daily.
   E.On was reported to have fixed a Cargill relet from Bolivar to Hadera at $11.50 or $11.75.
   Cargill booked the E.On relet Alpha Millennium 170,415-dwt 2000-built from Carboneras via Brazil to the east at a weaker $26,000 daily - a rate some said equated to $18.50 on voyage based on Vale terms.
   The Cyclades 171,480-dwt 2004-built was linked with CSE for  9-19 January cargo from Tubarao to Kaohsiung at $18.00. The ship was said to be waiting, but this was not confirmed.
   The same charterer was also reported to have taken the Navios Lumen 180,661-dwt 2009-built for a Port Cartier/Kaohsiung cargo, but a rate was not reported. The ship was 4 January in Rotterdam.
   In the east, Rio Tinto reportedly took two ships at $7.50 from Dampier to Qingda, the Pioneer for 24-25 January delivery plus another undisclosed vessel.
   Cargill failed with the Centrans Leader, for a 14-23 January cargo on the same at $7,75 and will use its own ship the Vogesailor, 1996-built 164,188-dwt.
   The baby cape Anangel Dawn, 115,000-dwt ex yard Shanghai 14 January fixed voyage business from West Australia to China on private terms.

PANAMAXES
   The Atlantic Panamax market remained steady but there was just a sense that the transatlantic market was slowing down and a significant amount of the January US Gulf/east positions clearing out.
  For now there was little fresh cargoes to replace the business fixed, brokers added.
   In the east there appeared to be a small window of opportunity for prompt tonnage. Some owners were trying to resist low rates and with a significant premium paid for US Gulf rounds, ships ballasting and some reasonable short period rates, charterers needing prompt ships have increased their rate ideas for Pacific round voyages.
   There was talk that Norden paid $16,000 daily for short period and was linked with the 74,897-dwt 2010-built Rosco Banyan open Nantong 10 January, but this was not confirmed.

ATLANTIC
   Eagle Bulk took the Fair Lady, 76,608-dwt 2005-built from San Cyprian 14-16 January for 2 laden legs with the first from Port Cartier (breaching IWL) to the US Gulf at $25,000 daily with Skaw-Cape Passero range - the rate reflecting the initial trade.
   The Pontodamon, 72,917-dwt 2000-built open Cape Passero 8 January reportedly went on subjects for 2 legs within the Atlantic at $21,000 daily, but a charterer was not disclosed.
   Earlier Norden booked the Tyana, 2010-built 82,000-dwt Cape Passero 7-8 January for 2 legs within the Atlantic at the same rate.
   Windrose took the 92,576-dwt 2007-built Eptalofos from Rotterdam 6-8 January for a US Gulf grain cargo at $19,000 daily with ARA-Hamburg range redelivery.
     CTP reportedly fixed the YM Virtue 76,610-dwt 2003-built due Southwest Pass 25 January for a trip to the east at either $27,000 or $27,500 daily plus a $700,000 bonus.
   Wednesday the C.S. Queen, 72,465-dwt 1998-built went at $27,250 daily plus a $650,000 bonus, but a charterer was not reported. The charterer is due 24-25 January Balboa.
   Alfred C.Toepfer has been actively taking ships from the east for US Gulf business and was today linked with the Gurasis, 75,339-dwt 1997-built open spot north China for a gulf round at a touch over $12,000 daily. The charterer had taken another vessel, but details were not disclosed.
   The Coronado 75,706-dwt 2000-built open Inchon reportedly did a US Gulf round at $14,000 daily, but a charterer was not reported.
   The New Esmeralda, 69,485-dwt 1990-built open Lianyungang 9-10 January fixed and failed for a US Gulf round, but little else emerged.
   Earlier STX Pan Ocean paid the 1996-built 71,662-dwt Oinoussian Lion a good $15,000 daily from Hachinohe for a NoPac round.
 
ASIA
  In the east there were charterers allegedly increasing their rate ideas for prompt tonnage for NoPac rounds, but little definite has been reported fixed.
   Louis Dreyfus was rumoured to have taken tonnage earlier this week for NoPac business at something in the low $7,000 daily for a ship in China. The charterer was unlikely to repeat this, sources suggested.
   Oldendorff booked Capitola, 74,816-dwt 2004-built for a Port Kembla/China possibly at $7,250 daily, but this was not confirmed.
   Earlier Klaveness booked the 75,265-dwt 1995-built Trenton open 8-10 January Lanshan for a trip via Port Latta with China redelivery at just $6,500 daily.
   The Coal Glory, 73,760-dwt 1995-built open north China has gone, but details were not reported.
   The Ocean Favour, 72,400-dwt 1998-built Fangcheng 11 January was rumoured booked for a trip to the Atlantic, but little else emerged.
    EShips relet the 75,239-dwt 2008-built Ecosand G.O. open Jebel Ali 7-8 January for a trip from west coast India to China at $16,000 daily plus a $125,000 bonus basis aps Goa. A charterer was not reported.

HANDY/SUPRAMAXES

ATLANTIC
   Atlantic rates were still holding at steady levels for Supramaxes and handysizes, brokers said.
   Oxbow was reported fixing the Top Fair for a 15-25 January 55,000-tonne 10% petcoke cargo from the US Gulf to the ARA-Ghent range at $25.00 with 15,000-tonnes bends, but this was said to be inaccurate.
   The same charterer was said to have taken a D'Amico vessel for a Jose/Iskenderun 50,000 to 60,000-tonne cargo at $27.50 basis 27,000-tonnes shinc 12,000 shex.
   Proline took the Korea Line E.R. Bilbao 55,783-dwt 2010-built on subjects for a trip from the US Gulf to Lisbon at a steady $28,500 daily. The charterer had been initially looking to fix Panamax.
   For the smaller sizes, the 39,225-dwt 1984-built Biloxi Belle achieved a good $22,500 daily for 9-14 January delivery Recalada for a trip to the Continent, but a charterer was not reported.
   The CMB Weihai, 33,720-dwt 2010-built agreed a healthy $21,000 daily from Paranagua 15-20 January for a trip to the Continent or Mediterranean.
  
ASIA
   Rates remained under pressure for Supramaxes with rates around $8,000 daily for 52,000-tonners.
   AWB booked the Equinox Dawn, 2002-built 52,015-dwt spot north China for a NoPac/Philippines run at that level.
   ARK Shipping took the 2005-built 55,711-dwt Mimi Selmer from north China spot for a trip via NoPac to Bangladesh at a low $10,000 daily.
      Nickel ore cargoes were at a premium and Samsun was reported paying $16,000 daily to the Rui Ning 2 spot Lanshan for a trip from the Philippines to China, although some brokers said the rate was basis aps.
    However a 53,000-tonner was reported on subjects delivery Philippines for a trip to China at $12,000 daily.
    However period rates remained at a significant premium with the 57,000-dwt 2007-built Global Star open Rizhao 6-8 January fixed at around $14,000 daily, but a charterer was not disclosed.
